Most people find kisses from dogs playful and adorable. Although it is sort of funny when that watery and slobbery tongue tries to lap at your face that can be very dangerous and unhealthy.

So what would you do if you know that not everything is healthy and harmless about it?

Stay cool, because we are not telling you that your best furry buddy is attempting to harm you on purpose. Honestly, your dog is just trying to show you affection. Unfortunately, there is a lot of bacteria on your dog’s tongue that can be very dangerous for you.

So I guess you have heard the saying that a mouth of a dog is truly cleaner than our personal mouth.  Sadly, we have to destroy this myth. That is absolutely not true.

According to dog expert and author Marty Becker in order to recognize that this is completely false, all you have to do is simply look, smell and watch. He said that our dogs attack the garbage can almost every day. And then he continues by saying that although we give each other kisses on the cheek when we say hi, our dogs give each other peck a on the rear end.

In addition to that a bacteriology professor from Queen Mary University in London, John Oxford shared with us the number of bacteria that our dog can hold in his mouth and muzzle.

“It is not just what is carried in saliva. Dogs spend half their life with their noses in nasty corners or hovering over dog droppings so their muzzles are full of bacteria, viruses, and germs of all sorts.”

In regards to that, it is well known that the same viruses and germs can lead to conditions that are critical to our health. That was the case with one woman from the UK who discovered this because of her personal health developments.

What actually happened in that case, is that she got an infection from her Italian greyhound’s saliva. At first, she didn’t notice anything but  while she was speaking to a relative on her phone,  that day her speech was mumbling. She immediately called an ambulance but by the time they reached her home, she was already collapsed in her chair and her health was getting worse rapidly. Once admitted, she stayed two weeks in intensive care and took a lot of antibiotics. When her blood tests came, they revealed capnocytophaga canimorsus bacteria in her system which was a trigger for this infection. It is a bacteria that is generally found in the mouths of cats and dogs.  Later she was surprised to find out that there have been 13 similar cases presently throughout the UK.

Besides, that is not the only infection that your dog can pass onto you from his thong.

You can also get Ringworm infection. And this may be one of the easiest infections that your dog can pass to you. So if there is a ringworm bacteria in their mouth and they lick you, you will have ringworm also.

Another infection is MRSA.  This is a very serious bacteria that can produce infections in many parts of your body. Same as the before-mentioned, this infection can also be generated just by one lick from your dog. Your dog can have this bacteria and it will have a really little effect on his health. However, if it transfers to you then you will have serious health problems.

Similar to MRSA is the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. These bacteria can also be found in your dog’s mouth but is not as resistant to treatment. However, it is recommended to avoid licking in such case anyway.

Capnocytophaga Canimorsus is one of the most harmful infections. His doctor told this man that the infection occurred when his dog licked an open wound that he had.

His feet were so critical that one of them had to be partially removed.

At the end, we don’t want to scare you, but it is of vital importance to be careful about sharing kisses with your dog. Probably you will catch a disease that will leave you with just one foot and damaged hands. However, are you willing to take a chance?

Stay safe and avoid kissing your dog!
